Mayhaw Berries

Today my son was telling me that he wanted Mayhaw jelly on his peanut butter sandwich. I thought he was joking around until he convinced me to look it up. So here's what I now know about this little known fruit from the South.

There's a tree that grows wild only in the swamps down in the southern states like Mississippi. The berries, which are really like apples, are harvested quite like cranberries up in the Yank states. The trees have thorns so usually the berries are fished out of the water with huge nets. After boiling and squeezing the juice out, a "special occasion" jelly is made. Apparently some Rebels make wine with it too.

Sounds like I need to get me sum a that thar juice.
